The bark is as about 1 cm wide strip above the base of the medullary pyramids and fills the space between renal columnae than the pyramids. From the starting cord protrude straight portions of the renal tubules (Partes rectae) and collecting ducts in the form of so-called medullary rays into the cortex. The cortical tissue around the medullary rays is called a cow maze. It includes the winding Tubulusanteile (Partes convolutae) and renal corpuscles.
