He is a relative of the pufferfish and is found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. Sometimes individual animals get lost in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. A female lays about 1 million eggs . He is born with about 1/4 mm in length, fully grown he reaches up to about 4 m in diameter and has a skin thickness of about 15 cm. It takes a long needle for injections to get through ! The mouth is later fused to form a round opening and he mostly eats jellyfish and microbes which he sucks inside his mouth. He has no real stomach, instead just a stomach-shaped extension at the junction of the esophagus to the duodenum. Also interesting is the arrangement of the fins and the tail, which is not a real tail. The fins are moved oppositional, thus enabling propulsion. Skin and flesh of the ocean sunfish are poisonous and edible only in specific forms of preparation.
