The term mastopathy subsumes several proliterative and regressive changes in mammary glandular tissue. A hormonal dysfuntion causes this in many cases. The mastopathy is a primary abnormal reconstruction of glandular tissue, rarely a tissue neoplasia. Usually both breasts are affected. Mastopathy is caused by hormonal misregulation, while the estrogen-progesteron-equilibrium is changed in favor of estrogen. The effect of estrogen causes proliferation of glandular tissue. It can be observed as adenosis, hyalinosis, papillomatosis or epitheliosis. Due to an increased glandular secretion, glandular ducts dilate and form cysts.
