The tooth is an osseous construct that`s fixed in maxilla and mandible. The picture shows: Alveolar bone, gingvia, paradontium, dental cement. The enamel protects as the top layer, below it dentin, which surrounds the dental cavity with pulpa.
Facts about caries: It`s a multifactorial disease of the hard dental substances, that, without treatment, increasingly destroys structure and function of the teeth and can cause toothloss. In Europe, 98% of the population have caries, which makes it the most common disease in industrial countries by far. Caries is caused by a dysbalance of demineralisation and remineralisation of the teeth. According to König (1971), four factors have to be considered for the development of caries, which have to be there at once to initiate the disease process.
