Medullary thyroid cancer is a subtype of thyroid cancer that originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells). Types in order of number of frequency / typical age / 5-year-survival-rate with treatment:* Anaplastic type / 60 years of age / <10%* Follicular type / about 50 years of age / 80%* Papillary type / about 25 years of age / 80-90%* Medullary type / about 40-50 years of age / 60-70%Occurance of nodes in the thyroid is usually the first symptom in thyroid cancer. For diagnosis ultrasound and scintigraphy are used. Treatment options include surgery and radioiodine therapy.
