Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of insulin producing and secreting beta-cells in the pancreas. This destruction is almost always caused by the endogenous immune system and usually causes an absolute lack of insulin, i.e. an insulin therapy is necessary. Most patients are children, adolescents, or young adults when type 1 diabetes appears. This disease can arise in every age in principal.
