An edema describes liquid emission out of the vascular system and its accumulation in the interstitial. The term edema mostly describes liquid accumulations in the subcutis and certain organs such as the lung (lung edema) in everyday clinical practice. Edema can be caused by organs (disturbances of the cardiovascular system, the kidney, the gastrointestinal tract etc.) or by hormones, medicine and nutrition.
