Type I diabetes develops due to destruction of the insulin-producing and -secreting beta cells of the pancreas. This destruction is almost always caused by the body`s own immune system and usually leads to an absolute lack of insulin, which means that an insulin therapy is necessary. Patients are usually still children or young adults when type I diabetes occurs, but generally, this disease can occur in every age.
