The saphenous vein arises from the lower, medial margin of the foot and then moves into the vicinity of the saphenous nerve towards the medial side of the knee over to the saphenous opening, where it joins the vein star and drains into the femoral vein.
There are several perforating veins connecting the great saphenous vein with the deeper leg veins.
