Of all teeth the molars have the largest chewing areas (occlusal areas) und have a relief made from bumps and fissure which is important to their function. They are responsible for the grating and squashing of the food in the mouth.
In the maxilla the molars have three roots. The larger root is localised palatinally, the two smaller ones vestibularily. The smaller ones are distinguished in a distal and mesial root. Each root has at least one root canal. The mesial root usually as two root canals.
In the mandibula the molars have two roots. One root has a mesial localisation, the other distal. The mesial root typically has two root canals, a lingual and a buccal (vestibular) one.
