This photograph shows Faye Chen, Ph.D., and Wesley Jackson, Ph.D., volunteer postdoctoral fellow, examining a femoral head that was recovered from total hip replacement. From this femoral head researchers harvest adult mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow and the bone itself. The principal investigator for this work is Rocky Tuan, Ph.D., Chief of the Cartilage Biology and Orthopaedics Branch. This part of work in the laboratory is directed towards attempting to grow and differentiate adult mesenchymal stem cells into a variety of cell types that are suitable for repairing and regenerating musculoskeletal tissues, including cartilage.
