2-Oxo-L-threo-hexono-1,4-lactone-2,3-enediol. Ascorbic acid acts highly reductive as an oxidative agent. Humans, primates and guinea pigs cannot synthesize ascorbic acid. Other animals are capable of the synthesis of ascorbic acid from glucose because of the enzyme L-Gulonolactone oxidase.
