The patella is a flat, discoid, triangular bone in anterior view which is localised in front of the knee joint. It is contributes to the knee joint and acts as a sesamoid bone in the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle. It protects the knee joint and elongates the lever arm of the quadriceps femoris muscle.
