A phlegmon is defined as a diffuse purulent inflammation of the connective tissue by bacteria.A dreaded complication of the infection is the necrotizing fasciitis. Furthermore an abscess may occur at multiple sites. Even the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum can be infiltrated by a phlegmon. In addition, extensive tissue necrosis bears the risk of sepsis.
