Carotid artery (red reins), vagus nerve (white reins) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (black thread) are visible. The two electrodes for neuromonitoring are connected to the vocalis muscle and the subcutis (neutral electrode).Monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during surgery of the thyroid (goiter removal, thyroidectomy): The target muscle is the muscle of the vocal cord. The anatomic variability of the location and course of the nerve and the difficult preparation of the only about 1 mm thick nerve make neuromonitoring indispensable in surgery of thyroid carcinoma and recurrent goiter.
