Mast cells are large cells with coarse metachromatic granules, which contain abundant mediators of the allergic inflammation (eg, heparin, arachidonic acid metabolites, prostaglandin D2, leukotrienes). They are primary effectors of immediate-type allergic reactions. Mast cells are found in loose connective tissue of skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and other tissues.
