This 30nm large virus is named after the U.S. town of Norwalk. This pathogen causes epidemics of short lasting gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Similar enteropathogenic viruses are viruses that belong to the calicivirus and are the most common cause for serious gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea) in adults and children. Caliciviridea originates from the Latin "calix", and refers to the structure of viruses.
