The pineal gland is an edocrine gland inside the epithalamus. It secretes melatinin depending on light detection.
It is situated as part of the epithalamus at the back wall of the third ventricle above the tectum.
It is covered in a connective tissue capsula.
The neuroendocrine cells of the pineal gland, the pinealocytes, are seperated into lobules by septs.
There can be cacified inclusions, so called "brain sand", averculus.
