The brain is surrounded by liquid from the inside and from the outside (Liquor cerebrospinalis). The exchange of matter between blood and brain (liquor) is limited except for CO2, O2 and H2O by the blood brain barrier (blood-liquor-barrier). Some substances may pass with special mechanisms, others may not which is relevant for medication (liquor patency).
