Description: This is a colorized scanning electron micrograph showing a blood clot. Once platelets arrive at the site of injury and form a plug, they activate clotting factors. Fibrin is the most important clotting factor crosslinking with itself to form a mesh (shown in this image as a string-like mesh). A blood clot is also known as a thrombus and if this occurs when it is not required there can be serious consequences, such as a stroke or a heart attack.
