Arterioles are the smallest arterial vessels that come before capillaries. They are usually accompanied by a venule, a small vein. The wall of the arteriole (red) is much stronger than the one of the venule (blue) which is caused by the relatively thick layer of smooth muscle cells. Respective endothelium to cover the lumen as well as the muscle cell layer are clearly visible in both vessels.
