The prostate is an exocrine gland situated unter the male bladder and about the size of a chestnut. It encloses the urethra directly after its exit from the bladder.
The prostate produces part of the ejaculate which is excreted into the prostatic part of the urethra through the prostatic utriculi.
Cranially it touches the bladder and caudally the pelvic floor and dorsally the rectum.
On the right side of the picture the seminal vesicle (that in reality also exists on the left side) is visible.
Benign protstate hyperplasia (BPH) is a benign enlargement of the prostate that mainly appears from the 40th year of life on because of hormonal changes. It is therefore also calles aging protate.
The prostate tissue increses and hardens which leads to obstruction of the urethra that it surrouds, which leads to the following symptoms:
Treatment is directed by the subjective complaints of the patients. There are dug-treatment and surgical options.
