Blood in the synovial fluid
Bleeding into the synovial fluid. This clear, mucus-containing, ropy fluid is produced by the synovial membrane and protects the articular surfaces from attrition. When in contact with blood, it degenerates (see wavy line of the articular surface), causing inflammation.
