The illustration shows the epidermis. It`s the keratinized outermost epithelial skin layer (Integumentum comune) that is free from vessels or nerves. The epidermis consists of stratified squamous epithelium that can be divided into layers: The cornified layer (stratum corneum), translucent layer (stratum lucidum), granular layer (stratum granulosum), spinous layer (stratum spinosum), basal layer (stratum basale). The epidermis protects the body from the outside world. In this case, the Rein barrier prevents foreign objects from getting into the body.
