Messenger RNA, mRNA
Single-stranded nucleic acid that is produced in the nucleus, complementary to a strand of the DNA double helix (transcription). It transports the genetic information into the cytoplasm, where the ribosomes use it as a template to produce a specific protein (translation). Before its translation into a protein molecule, the mRNA has to be processed in the nucleus: The so-called splicing is the process of removing parts of the precursor mRNA, the intron, which don't contain relevant information on the protein structure.
