The mastication muscles consist of four skeletal muscles that insert onto the mandible and signigicantly contribute to the mastication process. Some authors also include the pharyngeal muscles into the mastication muscles. Four muscles are mastication muscles: The masseter muscle, temporal muscle, and medial and lateral pterygoid muscle. All four are innervated by the mandibular nerve, a major branch of the trigeminal nerve.
