The images show cell surfaces with adhering compartiments: Microvilli, brush border, stereocilia, kinocilia. Some of those are flexible, so their primary function is the transport of small substances, molecules, or secreted substances (e.g. sperm in the testicles). They are also involved in the absorption of substances (brush border in the bowel).
