Function of the liver cells
Microscopic illustration of the liver cells (hepatocytes) with its cellular compartments. Blood flows through the so-called sinusoids, passing the rows of hepatocytes, where the exchange of substances happens. The hepatocytes perform the metabolic labor, store metabolic products or produce bile, which is excreted into the two embedded bile canaliculi. Some products are returned into the blood and distributed in the body through the circulatory system.
