Liver with hepatocytes
Illustration of the liver and microscopy of hepatocytes with their cell compartments (enhanced). The blood flows through the so-called sinusoids, passing by the rows of liver cells (hepatocytes), where the substance exchange happens. The liver cells do the metabolic work, store metabolic products or produce bile, which is secreted into the bile canaliculi which are enclosed between the hepatocytes. Some products are returned to the blood and distributed to the body via the circulatory system.
