An infection with the EHEC pathogen can lead to the so-called hemolytic-uremic syndrome (also called Gasser-syndrome). It leads to an acute decomposition of red blood cells as well as platelets caused by the bacterial toxin vero-toxin; it can lead to renal failure. Dialysis is necessary in this case.
