The foramen magnum (pink) of the occipital bone is the biggest aperture of the cranial base. It connects the cranial cavity to the vertebral canal, between brain and spinal cord, which passes through the foramen, where it transitions into the medulla oblongata (brainstem). Other structures that pass through the foramen magnum are: Vertebral artery, accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI).
