Testicular torsion is a mostly spontaneous torsion of the testicle around the spermatic cord with a consecutive ischemia. In principle, occurence of the illnes is possible at any time, however, an accumulation can be observed in infants and adolescents. Typical clinical symptoms are sudden testicular pain, undescended testicle, radiation of pain in the ipsilateral lower abdomen and nausea and vomiting. The diagnosis can be secured or excluded by ultrasound. When in doubt, every acute painful testicle should be surgically exposed from the scrotum as an emergency indication to exclude or treat a testicular torsion.
