Esophagitis thoracic stomach
There are different causes possibly responsible for esophagitis:
Reflux of stomach acid is the most common cause. This is also called reflux esophagitis. The agressive hydrochloric acid attacks the mucosa. Frequently, an augmented production of stomach acid is resopnsible for it.
Chemical burns
Alcoholism is a common cause, too. The frequent consumption of beverages with high percentage of alcohol attacs the esophageal mucosa.
Drugs hazardous to the mucosa
Infectionen can also be a cause. In most cases, the pathogenic germs are herpes viruses
(especially in HIV-positive patients), cytomegalic viruses, or candida fungi
.
