A metaplasia is a transformation of one cell type into another one.
It is a qualitative alteration of body cells which does first not include an alteration of the cell number. The metaplasia leads to an alterated and mostly insufficient cell efficiency.
The cell differentiation in course of a metaplasia is reversible.
An irreversible cell transformation is called an anaplasia.
