Intra-abdominal abscesses can be located

visceral (e.g. liver abscess)

retro-peritoneal (e.g. psoas abscess)

intra-peritoneal (e.g. subphrenic abscess)

Subphrenic abscesses are mostly located on the right side and are caused by perforating trauma, surgery, direct infection as in diverticulitis, appendicitis, pancreatitis, biliary disease and primary peritonitis. Symptoms are fever and abdominal pain, in older patients symptoms can be misleading. Neighboring organs can be affected as in lung abscess and lower lobe pneumonia. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention is vital --> Ultrasound or CT guided percutaneous drainage and antibiotics
