Balloon dilatation Balloon dilatation means dilating a stenotic section of a blood vessel or hollow organ with the aid of a balloon catheter inflatable with air or fluids. Areas of application of the balloon dilatation include:

Vascular surgery and cardiology, to treat arteriosclerotic vascular stenosis of the peripheral arteries (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty) and the coronary vessels (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, PTCA)

Otorhinolaryngology, to dilate the draining channels of the paranasal sinuses in recurrent sinusitis (sinuplasty)

Gastroenterology, to dilate the

esophagus in strictures and achalasia
papilla duodeni maior or the bile ducts, and

Urology, to dilate the urethra in the region of the prostate (in luminal stenosis due to hyperplasia)
