The Great saphenous vein is the largest superficial vein of the lower extremities. Various forms exist. The great saphenous vein originates from the lower medial border of the foot and runs cranially up the ventral side of the leg in the vicinity of the saphenous nerve. It the then passes the knee medially reaching the saphenous opening to form the saphenous arch and join the common femoral vein.
