The term onychomycosis refers to an infection of the nails caused by pathogenic fungi. Toenails are 4 times more frequently affected than fingernails. If left untreated, onychomycosis can lead to complete destruction of nails.
The disease is relatively common (occurs in about 15% of people in Germany), and persistent.
