Retroviruses show a high mutation frequency; therefore the only effective therapy consists of multiple agents. Combinations of nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NARTIs) like azidothymidine with non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) and protease inhibitors are possible. They affect different levels of the virus replication cycle.
