Hemihepatectomy in liver cell carcinoma specimanHepatocellular carcinoma has three growth patterns:

Unifocal: A single, usually massive, tumor finding.

Multifocal: Multiple tumor clusters which may be diffused over large parts of the liver tissue.

Diffuse-infiltrative: The tumoris growing diffusely over the whole liver. In liver cirrhosis, a discrimination between tumor and tissue is complicated.

All forms of hepatocellular carcinoma tend to a strong invasion of the surrounding blood vessels. Thus, tumor processes may possibly invade the Vena portae or Vena cava inferior and dislocate the vascular lumen.
