The contractile vacuole, an organelle used by many protists for osmoregulation of water and some ions, such as calcium, is connected to the cell surface in Tetrahymena usually by two “pores," indentations of the plasma membrane. A spent food vacuole lies nearby. TEM taken on 1/8/74 by R. Wolf with Hitachi HU11A operating at 75kV. Neg. 17,500X. Bar = 1?m. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis.
