The anterior end of Euplotes tilts upward and contains triplet rows of cilia which are elements of the AZM. Ridges between the membranelles of the AZM contain mitochondria and electron transparent vesicles, with or without electron opaque granules, lie below the membranelles. The cytosol at the dorsal surface of the cell has a compact layer of mitochondria. TEM taken on 7/29/67 by R. Allen with Philips 200 operating at 60kV. Neg. 1,800X. Bar = 5?m. Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol, and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was scanned and processed in Photoshop. This image is best used for qualitative analysis. A high resolution image is available at (CIL:38889) that can be used for quantitative analysis.
