The cranial dura mater is part of the dura mater which envelopes the brain within the skull. It belongs to the meninges. The cranial dura mater builds the extension of the spinal dura mater above the foramen magnum. It consists of 2 layers which are both grown together so unlike the spinal canal there is no epidural space. The outer layer (the periosteal layer) is grown together with the periosteum of the cranial cavity. The inner layer (the meningeal layer) which has the arachnoid mater beneath builds areas of infolding like the Falx cerebri and the tentorium cerebelli that seperate the brain.Between the two layers there are blood vessels and the cranial sinus.
