The heart is located inside of the mediastinum behind the sternum in a pericard. The pericard consists of 2 layers. The greatest part of the cardial mass is built by the myocardium, which is covered by the endocardium on the inside and by the epicardium on the outside.Anatomically, the heart consists of 2 ventricles and 2 atriums, which are seperated from each other by cardiac valves and integrated in the pulomary and systemic circulation. The heart itself gets its blood supply from the coronary arteries. The cranial and dorsal areas of the heart where the trunks enter are called basis and apex cordis.
