The arterial occlusive disease is a systemic disease of the arteries which is caused by arteriosclerotic narrowing of the vessels. In turn a discrepancy of arterial blood supply and oxygen demand develops. If extremities are primarily affected it is called peripheral arterial occlusive disease.
