Right elbow of a male patient (profession: conservationist) with reactive phototoxicitiy, also photodermatitis, after plant contact (the responsible plant could not be identified)Clearly discernible are the reddish hyperpigmentation of the skin, status post wheal formation and secondary superficial skin lesions. These are due to chemical structural changes of certain photo-instable parts of the plant (e. g. psoralenes/furocumarines) because of UVA radiation. The modified substances cause (photo-)toxic reactions. The patient noted the change of skin color and complained about burning pain and itching (pruritus).
