There are 4 stages:
Asymptomatic inapparent stadium:
Hyperuricemia is present but lacks symptoms. The disease is an incidental finding in laboratory exams.
Acute Gout attack :
Passing the solubility limit of uric acid leads to the precipitation of urate crystals in the joint cavity ensuing a respective strong inflammatory reaction. The metatarsal-phalangeal joint of the big toe, ankle joint, knee joint, finger joints, carpus and elbow joint are the most frequently affected joints.
Intercritical Phase:
The interval between two acute gout attacks generally is symptomless. The pathological alteration of the joint however continues.
Chronic Gout:
Persistent recurring episodes of gout result in tissue alteration in the region of precipitated urate crystals. The cartilage becomes thick and hardened forming gout tophi.
