Basal-cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor in central Europe. The incidence in Germany is estimated to be 30-100 cases per 100,000 persons. The incidence has increased in recent years, due to changes in recreational activities and more exposure to UV radiation. Men and women are equally affected. People with fair skin, blond or red hair, and blue or blue-green eyes (Fitzpatrick types I and II) are susceptible to sunlight and at increased risk of developing skin cancer. The age of peak incidence is the 6th decade. 75% of cases are located on the head. Only 5% occur on the torso or the extremities.
