A fracture of the tibial head usually occurs through a trauma. In most cases a fall from great heights is responsible when the patient falls on the legs. This leads to large compression forces along the length between femur and tibia, which leads to impression and fracture of the tibial head through the condyles of the femur.
Alternatively a direct force on the knee itself, such as a car accident can cause this fracture (dashboard injury).
