Stemmer's sign is a clinical sign, indicating the presence of lymphedema. It is positive if the skin of the forefoot cannot be pinched and lifted.Testing for Stemmer's sign consists of trying to lift the skin over the second toe, using the thumb and index finger in a pinching movement. If the skin cannot be lifted, Stemmer's sign is positive, indicating lymphedema. A negative Stemmer's sign, however, does not exclude the presence of lymphedema.(Image by: Andreas Wittlinger)
